Help Thread on RCGroups!!!
So far this is the best 3 axis airplane gyro I have experianced. Bar none, this is worth the value of the device without a doubt. Unlike some other solutions, when you put 3 axis on your plane, it still flies like a plane. When you turn it off, the travel adjust is normal and not truncated like some other heli gyros do. Note that these may be out of stock so look closely when you order.
Comes with cables to connect to Rx
They are in high demand here in 2012.

Rate mode or Heading HoldOn/Off, configurable gainBy far the most extensive configuration variations availble.  VERY detailed manual. you can set it up to turn one axis (like rudder) off and leave the others on. Inputs are configurabla and you can have muliple outputs per channel (like Elevator and Inverted Elevator output for split elevators)

Eagle A3 ProRate mode 3 axison/offRemote RATE/OFF/Heading Hold capability added to the A3 via a seperate channel. No remote gain capability. When you turn it off, the travel adjust is normal and not truncated like some other heli gyros do. Elevon/Delta Wing capable. I found gains on HH mode sensative and you really need mechanical trims for HH. Best used as a simple setup Rate mode w/ remote on/off capability

NO Elevon/Delta Wing configuration available.
Note: Author has only a few flights on this gyro but others have posted to the RCG thread on their experiances.
Note: You need 3 Male-Male servo jumpers
Note: Gain dials are VERY sensitive. Hopefully this will be resolved in a later revision.

GY48V Label UP Yes Yes Best US available Sub $20 Piezo gyro that I've used. HobbyPartz has cheap shipping on it. Check Xheli also and use the parts express shipping for cheaper shipping. Current plastic case version requires NO MODS. Best Vibration Tolerant Piezo gyro I've seen. This is best implemented with analog servos and  using Rate mode. It is a good stable Piezo Heading hold mode gyro though as well. One of the best piezo gyro to be able to set to OFF position. When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 25-30%. If you want to use a cheap Piezo, I recommend this gyro or the G401B
Futaba GY401 Label UP Yes Yes Best Gyro for use in an airplane in my opinion you will find around $150 or less. MEMS sensor. EXTREAMLY Vibration tolerant. Widely used in larger Nitro and Gas powered planes that have a Gyro. Many people report that you must be in HH mode when you power up to initialize the gyro properly. When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 25-30%.  Be careful what you get on ebay I have heard of counterfiet GY401 units being sold in China.  If the price it too good to be true, it's likely fake.  You can find good deals around $70 for these used. A good place to get one new is Amain Hobbies
Futaba GY520Label UpYesYesThis is a more modern version of the GY401. Not as vibration tolerant still very vibe tolerant, but smaller and more responsive than the GY401.  I personally have one in a 1/4 scale Bi Plane rudder and used the Zeal GEL tape method of mounting. When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 25-30%. A good place to get one new is Amain Hobbies
G401B
HK401B
Label Up Yes Yes Sold by several suppliers and rebranded for Hobby King. Available in USA by CNCHELICOPTER. Requires MOD to the Gyro to eliminate vibration sensitivity. Sensor is a Piezo. When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 25-30%.  One of the best piezo gyro to be able to set to OFF position. If you want to use a cheap Piezo, I recommend this gyro or the GY48V
GWS PG-03 Label
Sideways
No, Rate Only No Drifts with temperature. You need to use setup dial to center trim each flight. Sensor is a Piezo
Futaba GY240
Label Up NO
HH or Rate switchable
No Best gyro I've found that does not require a Remote gain wire. Rate or HH mode is switchable on the Gyro. 95% of the circuit including sensor and controller chip is the same as the Futaba GY401. (See above). Sensor is an older version of MEMS.  Use this in Rate mode to start with a gain of 30%.
Esky 704A
Label Sideways Yes No Usable as a Rate gyro with remote gain. Does not perform that well in Heading Hold mode. Note that there is no Reverse switch on it. When turning off with a low Rate gain value, Control surface throw is reduced. Thus it's use with Gain off is restricted to Rudder only.Usable but not recommended to purchase unless you will fly Rate mode all the time and want a very small and light gyro. Sensor is a Piezo
Esky 704B Label Up Yes Yes Performs much like a GY401B. Some reports the case needs to be opend up and the board secured with foam tape or Goop. Sensor is a Piezo. Very outdated gyro. Tends to be vibration sensitive.
GY292
Label Sideways Yes No Gyro must be initialized in Heading Hold mode, so when flying in Rate mode, You have to have a HH mode programmed. Usable, but not recommended to purchase . Difficult to achieve an OFF position. Sensor is a Piezo
Turnigy 380
Label Sideways No No Has a gain wire but unusable from all my attempts. Small compact Rate only gyro. Gain dial is a bit hard to work with. Sensor is a Piezo. I recommend taking this gyro case off, using E-6000 goop and securing the board after a full inspection of the wires and circuit board. I have had one come delivered that was bad.
Colco GY400
Label Up Yes No Small and light. When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 25-30%.  Difficult to achieve an OFF position.  Usable but you would want a setup that allows you to keep Rate mode on most of the time. Sensor is a Piezo
Esky 704 (not the A or B version)
Label Up No No This gyro is the best Sub $30 piezo gyro that I've found that is Rate only and does not require a gain channel connection. Set to 20-30% gain to start with.  Zero gain is fully CCW.  I used it on Aileron so I mounted it with label facing forwards. You can also mount it with label facing back for aileron control as well. Sensor is a Piezo. NOTE: These are out of stock everywhere. Esky appears to have stopped making them.
Detrum GY192 Label Sideways Yes No You should MOD THIS GYRO. It's inexpensive, small and light. Performance is like that of the Esky 704A. It seems to be almost a copy if the 704A. Gyro is out dated. Sensor is a Piezo. Use it if you have it but don't go buying one.
Assan GA250Label UpYESYESInexpensive $10 gyro using the new technology Invensense MEMS gyro chip. Some software varations are out there so I only recommend using this when New from hobby king and not when used and resold.  When you turn it off (low rate gain), the travel adjust is truncated by about 30-50%. So this one is VERY bad if you are going to want to fly it in an OFF position for anything but the rudder.

* If a gyro does not support Digital servo output, it can still be used with digital servos. I will have a slower servo update rate (critical in helicopters, not as critical in Airplanes)

GYRO MODS
I classify gyros as "Label UP" or "Label Sideways".  To identify your gyro type, Look for examples of the gyro mounted into an RC Helicopter.  Most gyros are installed Label UP (A Label UP gyro may be installed with Label DOWN in a Helicopter).  Knowing the type will assist you in mounting it into the proper Axis. Some examples are:
Orientation of how a LABEL UP gyro mounts
Orientation of how a LABEL SIDEWAYS gyro mounts
